This year’s flu epidemic has generated enough concern that it shows up at
number 20 on this week’s Lycos 50. Flu searches have doubled in the past two
weeks, and tripled over the past four weeks. Search queries specify flu
shots, flu vaccine and flu symptoms. Also popular is Flu Mist, a brand of flu
vaccine. Meanwhile, one famous fashion name returns to The Lycos 50 this
week. As the controversy over Abercrombie and Fitch’s "indiscrete" Christmas
catalog heats up to number 10 on this week’s list.

Other Notes of Interest:
Yet another unsuspecting person has found her naked photos plastered
across the Internet. This time it’s Sharon Smith (#45), the mayor of Houston,
British Columbia, who made the unfortunate decision to go out of town a few
weeks ago, and her kids threw a party in her absence. One of their friends
found his way to the family computer, discovering pictures of Mrs. Smith in
her birthday suit, and those pictures inevitably found their way onto the
Internet. While back in the states, an odd phrase, miserable failure, makes
it to number 24 on this week’s Lycos 50. A number of those who are
disappointed with the Bush presidency have rigged Web sites to fool search
engines into placing the White House Web site as the first result that comes
up when the phrase miserable failure is searched.
