The relevance of the internet has caused the need for a website to be a top priority with every modern business and shared hosting is the way to achieve that goal without too great an expense; there are some concerns that go along with it both on the security and availability front. The decision to go with a shared setup hinges on the goals of the business and available funds. Size, hits per day, and features are all considerations that go into deciding on whether a shared web server will be sufficient. Sometimes it will require a test period to see if the limited power of sharing can handle everything.

Security is the number one concern on everyone’s list. Data is a valuable commodity and so protecting it is a key feature. Customers will quickly shy away from anything they feel is unsecure. Businesses that depend on online sales, whether partially or completely, will see declining numbers if they are unable to provide a safe and secure environment for confidential information. Shared web hosting adds an additional security concern in that it has other people with access to the server. Permissions and roles will keep the average user from accessing another company’s data on a shared web server, but those with malicious intent will be one step closer, than they would be were the data on a standalone server.

Some businesses do not carry sensitive data on their website and security concerns shift to just the website itself. The availability of information technology professionals will prevent most security breaches and they can do their best to return a company’s website from a backup; this happens whether shared hosting is used or not. With security set aside, cost becomes the most important factor. The cost of shared web hosting is often in the range of $10 a month, sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on what additional features are purchased.

Bandwidth can be a problem, but this is a fairly rare issue; it can be a major sign of a low quality service provider and be an early warning sign that a change in order. Most companies will limit the amount of monthly bandwidth each individual website is allowed to have; this limits are fairly generous and if the proper web hosting package is purchased will rarely become an issue. When there is an issue it is mostly due to malicious activity. Big businesses or websites with a high level of traffic will have a need for a dedicated server, but the average consumer or small business can succeed with simple shared hosting.

One sure sign of a growing business is when it has grown beyond the range of shared web hosting; this is when maintenance fees will go up as the business moves to a dedicated server or virtual private server (VPS). The best place to start, if your website does not contain a lot of personal data, is with shared web hosting and from there it is easy to gauge when the limits are being exceeded and an upgrade is in order.

If you have switched on your television you have probably heard of the saying “Going Green”. A number of different businesses in industries ranging from automotive to cleaning are advertising green services that are environmentally friendly and safe. Green companies use alternative forms of renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint on the plant. With growing awareness of Global Warming, it is no surprise that web hosts are also going green to prove that they are not damaging the environment just to allure consumers and web site owners. If you have been browsing the Internet and you are wondering if green hosting is all that it is cracked up to be, review this honest information on green web hosting and decide for yourself.

Why is Green Hosting Necessary?

Internet usage statistics show that world usage is growing between 400 and 1000 percent per year. With more and more website owners looking for hosting companies to host their domains, there has been a growing need for hosts and space. It takes electricity, natural resources, and equipment to host a website. The growing demand for hosts has led to a dramatic increase in pollution caused by energy consumption in the industry. In fact, if statistics stay level, the hosting industry will be responsible for more pollution than the airline industry by 2020. To cut down on the demand and the criticism, hosting companies are going to green to cut down on energy consumption.

What Makes a Hosting Company a Green Company?

Green hosting companies are on the rise. With more and more environmentally-conscious individuals scrutinizing the industry’s use of energy, companies are putting a strong focus on reducing their use of energy and natural resources by developing green plans and procedures. True green hosts implement a renewable energy plan, recycle all of their waste, and purchase RECs to power their operational centers. Some green web hosting service providers also take part in planting trees and other volunteer efforts to help the planet. Not only do companies receive a good name in the industry, they also receive government energy credits and other incentives that you should be aware of.

Should You Do Business With a Green Host?

Now that you understand the concept, you may be wondering if you should encourage the effort by doing business with a green host. The answer to this question depends on the company. Just because a lot of hosting services call themselves green hosts does not mean there service providers are actually dedicated to saving the environment. Some companies buy energy credits from other companies to get the green label even when they consume tons of energy. If you are looking for a truly green company, you should look for hosts with a green corporate culture. Read the hosts text carefully to see if the host is more than just talk.

If you believe that using a green host will make you feel better about your affect on the environment, choose a company that uses Energy Star approved servers. Make sure the company has core values you can relate to and never believe a host is “green” just because that is what they market.

Third party participation is an increasing commonality in the online community, whether it is a product, service or information relay. It is not uncommon to contract one person or company’s offerings, only for the request to be fulfilled by a third party. For example, if an individual purchased bedding through Overstock.com, Overstock.com would appear as the merchant on their credit card, and the packaging will be representative of their brand upon receipt. When, in fact, Overstock has simply purchased the bedding from a number of third party resellers in large quantities, and marketed it as their own. This practice is a conventional method of doing business on the internet. Not unlike third party retailers, web hosting services take on a similar role. If you purchase your web hosting services through your web designer, it is almost always true that they market those services as their own, when they are actually playing the part of web hosting resellers.

What is Resell Web Hosting?
Web host resellers use their hard drive and bandwidth to host their customer’s websites. It is common for web designers, information technology firms, or system integrators to market web hosting as their own service, even though they are operating on behalf of a third party. Reseller web hosting is the result of purchasing a larger company’s host services at a wholesale price, and in large quantities, to accommodate a number of client’s website needs and activity, and then selling the space at a profit to their clients.

The Pros & Cons of Resell Hosting
The positive side of considering resell hosting is that you can accommodate all of your website’s needs with one company. If it is your IT firm that hosts your site, they can make a strong case for updating your site, while managing the hosting duties, all in one place, to increase your site’s up time, while also insuring that the site’s maintenance is achieved without disruption. The cons of resell hosting are that you have no control over who the reseller uses to rent hosting space. In the event that they picked a company that is inept in their duties, or that could possibly go out of business, the result would be an increase in your website down time.

Being a Successful Website Reseller
Begin by renting hosting space from white label web hosts. White label web hosts allow you to brand the space you rent from them as your own, instead of using their logo or company information. This helps create a seamless transition from being viewed as your client’s web designer, to the company that also provides web hosting. Reseller hosting can allow the operator to create their own service plans and determine their personal pricing structure, allowing success to come quickly in the form of increased revenue. Another key to success is renting space from a renowned hosting company. Be sure to research different hosting sites prior to purchasing dedicated or shared space with them. This will allow your customers the benefit of a constantly functioning website, while allowing you to look like a rock star in the reseller hosting industry.

As its title implies, “managed hosting” denotes a web hosting arrangement that includes the provision of key managerial and technical services to hosted client sites. Like consumers, virtual business operators have a plethora of internet access service providers from which to choose. In fact, commercial server hosting contracts are identical to consumer analogues in all respects – with one exception.

Web servers’ customers pay to display – rather than view – virtual platforms. Unlike internet access by individual users, commercial website operation entails constant involvement in various technical operations for effective functioning.

Virtual sites have varying service needs

Ordinary people have many motivations for accessing the World Wide Web. Their reasons range from entertainment via online video games or high-quality virtual graphics appreciation to occasional browsing of textual displays out of sheer boredom. Others (like students) use the internet for research and the completion of academic exams or assignments. Still others make their living on the ‘Net as online content writers or affiliate marketers. Each of these online access need categories demands correspondingly diverse software and hardware capabilities.

Likewise, virtual business operators have technical expertise and electronic data transmission capability requirements that vary widely. In response to these differing client needs, server hosting providers have taken a multi-tiered approach. Indeed, any or all of the following types of managed hosting may be featured by a single web host:

Fully managed web hosting

This format requires no client intervention whatsoever to maintain smooth internal site operations. The web hosting service provides all necessary security, software, technical, and maintenance services. Such an arrangement is generally most beneficial for smaller businesses with relatively few resources to devote to full-time technical staff employment.

Managed

Commercial site operators opting for this type of managed hosting service must engage only in routine or occasional web page management functions which require very little technical knowledge or experience.

Self-managed services

All initial software installations, subsequent upgrades, and site security maintenance are the customer’s sole responsibility. This option is often most cost effective for software corporations or other large e-businesses with substantial in-house resources.

Consistent quality indicators

Regardless of which managed hosting option an online website operator selects, advance investigation of any prospective provider’s reputation for quality and reliability is imperative. After expending substantial effort and expense to construct a web-based business platform, its diminished effectiveness due to excessive technical downtime and consumer inaccessibility caused by technical difficulties is a colossal waste.

Although managed hosting arrangements come with a higher cost than other options, such arrangements offer small businesses on shoestring budgets great value. The next visitor might become your single biggest sale. The last thing any prudent website operator wants is to become like the fisherman left with mere regretful reminiscence about the “one that got away.” The cost of utilizing server hosts with proven abilities to implement software upgrades, bandwidth increases, upgrades and other vital additions or innovations is a worthwhile investment. Bolstered business volume and enhanced virtual market visibility add up to multiples of your initial expenditure.

Virtual private server is a unique mix of dedicated hosting and shared hosting. The VPS option is more affordable for small or medium business that is not prepared for the expense of dedicated web hosting. VPS creates partitions on the server that allows each user to have their own space on the server without affecting other users on the server.

The virtualization of a server creates virtual machines on one server. Each user can use the operating system of their choice. The affordability of VPS makes this a better choice for small businesses. While it does not have all of the advantages of dedicating hosting, it does provide similar advantages for a much more reasonable price.

One of the best advantages of VPS is you no longer have to share resources with other users. Your website will have faster loading times. This is an important feature. If you page takes too long to load, you may lose potential customers.

By using VPS instead of shared hosting, you will increase your storage and CPU capacity. For those that run multiples sites and have high traffic pages, this added capacity will help you manage your online business.

If you are currently using shared hosting, you may want to consider switching to a virtual private server. Other users will not affect access to your websites. This is a problem with shared hosting and you could potentially lose business if other users run applications that use up the server resources.

The key is to choose a provider that provides reliable and secure servers. Several reputable companies offer VPS for under $20 per month. If your business is growing and you need an efficient method of developing and growing your business, you may be ready to switch to a virtual private server.

The price will depend on the amount of RAM you choose. For example, one company offers 300 MB for $15 per month. In addition, the bandwidth and disk space will dictate the monthly price. However, these packages are significantly less expensive than dedicated server packages. Many dedicated web hosting packages cost at least $75 per month.

It is likely the web hosting provider you are using offers VPS. You can check the prices and the packages the company may offer. If you are considering switching companies, many offer a 30 day money back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the performance of the virtual private server, you can select a different provider.

However, most business owners are satisfied with the services provided through VPS. It is likely you will notice a significant difference in response time. This will allow you to grow your business and increase traffic to your website. Your customers will have a better experience, and potential customers will not click away from a page that loads too slowly.

If you are concerned about the increased cost, choose the lowest package available. As you business increases, you can move up to the next available package. Most companies will allow you to move up to a higher package without penalties.

Linux/Unix hosting vs. windows hosting

The operating system (“OS”) that a prospective server employs is a primary consideration when deciding whether to go with a Linux web hosting or windows hosting format. As most might suspect, both server types feature specific benefits and drawbacks:
Choosing the best OS for your online business needs.

Following is an in-depth discussion of the four major types of web hosting systems that are currently in common usage:

- Linux

This system’s widespread popularity among website operators is due to its easy installation and low acquisition cost.

- Unix

As its title implies, this system’s format is very close to that of Linux. Its relatively higher costs for initial acquisition, software implementation, and hardware specificity requirements, make it a much less popular option than its Linux analogue, however.

- Macintosh

This server hosting structure is extremely rare. In fact, its usage incidence is so scarce that opting for Macintosh hosting service equates to self-service website display.

- Windows

Windows web hosting is a very popular service formant hosts due to widespread support availability and easy access to routine software maintenance and updates.

Safety in numbers

For various valid reasons, Linux and Windows systems are the two most popular and readily available web hosting systems. Like most self-perpetuating prophecies, this popularity is self-sustaining. Windows hosting formats typically support all MS applications.

Whereas, Linux is the “brain” behind the scenes of online website operations. It is an open source OS which is available for public use at no cost and may be freely shared. Linux/Unix hosting keeps various virtual devices like memory and communications in line with constant monitoring.

Server access

The manner in which users must access a hosting service is the most notable distinction between Windows hosting and Linux/Unix hosting systems. While both setups permit direct FTP file access, only Linux offers server access via SSH or Telnet. Although Windows hosting systems have the capability for such access, willing Windows host administrators are few and far between.

Write your own ticket to online business success

HTML web page service is another capability shared by both Windows and Linux/Unix providers. Windows-based servers can be identified by the “*.htm” URL header, while Linux/Unix providers employ “*.html.”

The Common Gateway Interface
Common Gateway Interface

(“CGI”) script formats allow the easy addition of forms and other user-defined substantive content to any website. CGI and Perl (another form script) may be found within both Linux and Windows host servers. CGI is much more common among Linux hosting services, however.
Hold onto high-tech data
Virtual business realms which run on very dynamic data input require comprehensive databases capable of frequent updates and revisions. Access™ and mySQL are the two database formats with the highest popularity. While the former may be found only within Windows-based server hosts, Linux hosting servers feature both formats.

Security of virtual sites is valuable

The ability to provide adequate security of hosted sites is an indispensable attribute of any worthwhile web hosting service provider. A popular school of thought holds that Windows hosting servers are more vulnerable to exterior threats than Linux/Unix hosting providers. The harsh reality and simple truth is that both system formats harbor potential threats to hosted platform integrity. Despite the specific OS employed, hosting service administration is the most important criterion which determines ultimate server security. Never neglect its thorough evaluation when assessing the feasibility of any prospective hosting service offering.

Sum Total

Taking all relevant factors into account, Windows hosting systems seem most viable for individual and smaller commercial clients. Linux/Unix hosting services offer more “behind the scenes” control of internal site operations, somewhat higher technical expertise is required for its efficient use and effective functioning.

A domain registrar is a service that allows you to register your unique website domain name so that no one else can own it. Domain registrars are accredited by both ICANN and gTLD registry to manage and reserve Internet domain names in compliance with the guidelines of the registries on the web. Only the registrar is given authorization to make modifications or delete information about domains from the central registry database. If you own an e-commerce business or you have a business website, choosing your domain registrar is very important. Once you choose a service provider, the organization is responsible for maintaining your domain name for as long as you own it. Understand how to choose the right registrar and how much you can expect to pay for services to make the best move.

What to Consider When you Are Sifting Through Domain Registrars?

All legitimate domain name registrars are accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). When you are sifting through different services providers, only consider the providers with accreditation. ICANN is a non-profit and private corporation that allocates IP addresses and manages the entire Internet Domain Name System. When you choose an accredited service provider, the provider is approved to manage the following top-level domain names:

* .biz
* .com
* .info
* .coop
* .name
* .aero
* .museum
* .net
* .org
* .pro

Do You Have to Work With a Registrar?

Site owners do not have to work with a registrar to register their domain names in the Domain Name System. You can choose hosting services to do the registration for you but this does become more expensive because you have to pay a transfer fee for registration. If your budget is important to you, independently registering your domain name through a registrar is more affordable.

Why Should You Host Your Site With One Company and Register With Another?

While some site owners choose to host and register with the same company for convenience, owners who want more for their money will choose two separate entities. Developers separate the two services and limit the control that any single registrar has over their site. The main reason why you would choose two companies is the cost. Choosing an independent registrar is much more affordable and will cost between $5 and $35 per year. If you choose your host for all of the services changing your host means you take your registrar with you so your customers may get lost in the transition. As you can see, your URL will be more accessible when you choose an independent registrar.

Should You Registrar Multiple Domains For Your Business?

Registering and using multiple domain names is a go idea if you want to build your business and protect your brand name. If you do not use multiple domain names, other businesses can turn your .com URL into a .net URL and attract clients who were looking for you. You can create a dynamic online presence and enjoy even more opportunities to market.

The Internet is a competitive place. With more than 16 billion active sites on the Internet, you have to take your domain name seriously. Choose a registrar who will manage and renew your registry and build brand awareness on the Internet.

Cloud hosting is a relatively novel form of virtual service delivery that has recently become very popular.

Cost-efficiency and scalability are the twin attributes that account for its vast advantages over other alternatives. I-Cloud mobile apps are an imminent example of taking the best from all possible worlds. Such formats permit the transmittal, sharing, and storage of data among many more users with greater ease than ever before.

Scalability

The secret underlying phenomenal cloud web hosting success is amazingly simple. Hosted websites and virtual infrastructures may adjust to varying levels of site traffic with exceptional ease. Because cloud hosting services are accessed by multiple clients, business sites avoid excessive downtime due to server crashes caused by unexpected surges in site visitorship.

Cost-efficiency

Greater affordability is probably the greatest advantage of cloud hosting service arrangements. Pecuniary gains are especially big for business clients with sites that require relatively low processing power needs. All service fees are based upon the precise amount of computing power actually consumed by respective hosted sites. This allows online business operators to avoid wasteful financial expenditures for excessive host resources and bandwidths in an effort to avoid untimely site failures.

Cloud vs. Dedicated server hosting

Eliminating costly downtime is the most common motivation for dedicated server hosting. Cost abosorbancies for superfluous technical features is an endemic economic paradox that smaller e-businesses constantly face. Cloud web hosting offers the opportunity to experience the best of both technical worlds, however. This is accomplished by the provision of automated hardware refreshment and comprehensive IT and customer assistance by cloud host service providers.

Cloud vs. other shared hosting services

Attempts to apply the volume discounts to web hosting arrangements that shared-tenancy arrangements afford are nothing new. Other alternatives existed long before the invention of cloud hosting service innovations. Mainframes, computing grids, and peer-to-peer formats have been around for decades.

Although such Herculean efforts at high-tech efficiency were quite laudable, loose organization was their common failing.

Cloud hosting helps web-based businesses conquer obstacles:

- Reliability

Resource centralization is the key cloud hosting characteristic which enables web-based merchants to fully exploit every available economic advantage. Redundant resource use by multiple sites greatly facilitates overall hosting service reliability and desirability.

 - Performance

In addition, cloud server hosting permits continuous performance monitoring and identical system interface implementation. This ability facilitates much better business continuity and rapid recovery in event of system failure or similar disasters experienced by the server host.

 - Security

Concerns abound about losing control over sensitive data and possible breaches of business site security. Despite such widespread fears, cloud hosting servers can actually facilitate data security that is equal to – or even in excess – of conventional server systems. This advantage stems from cloud servers’ ability to devote security solutions to specific hosted sites that respective clients would be otherwise unable to afford. Moreover, due to resource sharing by unrelated users, most cloud-based hosting servers employ more complex encryption and data security devices.

 - Maintenance

On a final note, cloud hosting makes website maintenance an easy task. This benefit is attributable to hosts’ ability to provide simultaneous routine maintenance to multiple users without access to individual sites’ infrastructures.

The cheapest webhosting sites are the ones that provide free hosting and only charge a fee for domain name registration. Such sites may or may not provide all the services that an expensive web hosting service provides, but they do provide adequate hosting for the average business. Following are some free hosting services along with web hosting tips for beginners.

Weebly
Weebly is a fast growing web hosting site. It provides a free and very easy to use hosting service that is basically “what you see is what you get.” Weebly provides a high level of support, only place a small, discreet footer advertisement on the site and allows one to easily set up most any kind of site. Weebly also provides basic site stats free of charge.

However, there are certain features, such as detailed site stats and referral information and the ability to embed audio and video files directly, which are only accessible to those who open a Weebly Pro account. This costs about $40 a year.

Webs
Webs is another popular free webhosting service. It is similar to Weebly in many ways. The free (also known as basic) hosting service enables one to get a template, set up a site and publish it. However, a free site is supported by Webs advertisements; an individual will not be able to place his or her own ads on the site. For those who find these terms unsatisfactory, Webs offered several paid plan options starting at under $4 a month.

Google Sites
Google Sites is yet another free website host. It provides numerous templates and is easy to use. Like everything else created by Google, it has a lot of options. However, it does not contain numerous Google advertisements.

Tips on Choosing a Web Host
It is important to note that free webhosting services will not offer all the benefits that a paid hosting service will offer. Depending on the nature of the site being set up, some of these benefits and features may be irrelevant. However, a person setting up a website should always note how much storage space is provided, what the bandwidth is (this determines how fast the site will load), whether or not Google Adwords can be placed on the site and whether or not sponsored advertisements are placed on the site and if so, how many and where. If the site is meant to be an e-commerce site, then be sure the free webhost can support this, as not all can.

Choosing the right webhosting company is very important, as it is very difficult to move a site to a new host later on. When in doubt, go with a webhost that offer paid plans; that way, the hosting can be upgraded if needed. One should also do a bit of research on any host he or she is considering using. See what others have to say about the host, make sure it is reliable and see how much is charged for a domain name. Choosing the right webhost is the first step in setting up a successful website.

What is Shared Web Hosting?

In a shared web hosting environment, many websites (or web applications) reside on a single web server. The server used for shared web hosting is called as a shared web server. In a shared environment, both the web server and the database used for storing data will be shared. This means a single database will support multiple websites running within the shared web server. Further, each site within the shared environment will be allocated a certain amount of web server and database resources—memory (RAM), CPU, hard disk and database schema—to run on. Each website in a shared environment will run within its own space or partition and will never be able to use resources allocated for other websites.

What is Dedicated Web Hosting?

In a dedicated web hosting environment, unlike shared web hosting, each website (or web application) will have its own web server and database systems. It means an entire web or database server will be dedicated to running a single website.

Clearly, a dedicated web hosting system is very flexible. The website hosting team will have complete control over the environment, i.e., the team can choose from among the various web servers, databases and other software available in the market for running their website. Websites within the shared environment will not have this choice. All the shared websites will use the same web server and database systems.

The main difference between the two hosting services lies in the amount of system resources available to each website running in the environment. In a dedicated web hosting environment, a vast amount of system resources will be available to a single web site or application. In the case of shared web hosting, each website will have a limited amount of system resources.

Advantages of Dedicated Web Hosting

-	With abundant system resources, the web sites or applications running in the environment perform better.
-	Security in a dedicated hosting environment is more secure than in a shared hosting environment.
-	There is a choice in the software that can be used in the environment. For example, if the website running in the environment needs more security, special security software, meant specifically for this site, can be installed on the system.
-	There is a higher bandwidth or data transfer speed.
-	There is high availability or uptime of the websites. Unlike dedicated hosting, in a shared hosting environment, a serious problem with any one of the websites could affect the availability of the other websites.

So, When to Choose Shared Hosting Over Dedicated Hosting?

The main reason for the choice of shared hosting is the cost factor; it is economical. Since many websites share the same environment, the website hosting parties will share the cost of operating and maintaining the shared resources. It is important to note that shared hosting is suitable for lightweight websites or applications only, i.e., the ones that require relatively fewer system resources. Running a resource intensive or high traffic website on a shared server can severely degrade the website performance.

Conclusion

Given the limitations of the shared hosting environment, one has to be careful before choosing it as a hosting solution. Generally, dedicated hosting is preferred for all mission critical and high traffic websites. It is also preferred for hosting those sites that access sensitive information from the database. On the other hand, shared hosting is more suited for low traffic websites and those sites that do not need access to sensitive information.
