This time of year everyone seems to be making resolutions for the New Year. I know that most folks resolve to lose weight, quit smoking, or learn a new language – but I’m resolving to increase traffic to my web site. Here are the top 5 things I am resolving to get done.

1. I resolve to have a rock-solid title tag. Most search engines, including the big three – Google, Yahoo, and MSN – place some importance on a website’s title tag. You can prove this to yourself by searching for something in Google, and then observing the title tag of the search result. Odds are that the title tag contains some form of the term that you searched for – so should the title tag on your web site.

2. I resolve to use text and not graphics to describe things on my site. The search engine spiders can’t categorize what they can’t see. If you are using graphics for main topic headings on your site, you should switch these to text. As the spiders crawl your site, they can then review your text and sort your web site appropriately.

3. I resolve to have a better list of keywords for Google AdWords. If you don’t know how to use pay-per-click search to drive website traffic – find out how fast. If you do, then you should have an exhaustive list of targeted keywords. Since you only pay when someone clicks on your ad, it makes sense to have lots of different search terms in your list. Plus it keeps costs down. Google has also introduced a cool, new tool to help expand your keyword lists. It’s called the ‘keyword tool’. You can access it from where you adjust your keyword bids. Try it out – it will help you increase your targeted keywords.

4. I resolve to issue a press release on my website’s activities. I have released news a few times through a great service at www.prweb.com. It works pretty well. The site permits any level of financial commitment to release your news – from free to several hundred dollars. I have found that for a minimum of $80 you get Yahoo! news distribution – which seems to really boost penetration. You must have something to tell people about if you run a web site – so why not publish a press release and get some additional site traffic?

5. I resolve to give something away on my web site this year. Site visitors expect to get something for nothing at your web site. Either information, or a free download, or something. So this year I’m going to increase the amount of free stuff I give away. We’ll have more free information and more free tools. This will drive the additional traffic that is necessary to monetize my web site.

I am resolved to have a great new year for my web site. The resolutions listed above should help me increase my website traffic. If you have a web site, why not try a couple of the ideas listed above this year? Good luck in increasing your website traffic.

Since my College days, when I was introduced to Unixes, I love to have my own compiled kernel. It gave me that special feeling of "my machine is better than yours". Besides, a custom kernel serves as an interesting conversation topic with geeks. Just ask them "What is your kernel size ?". This would keep the Geek busy for sometime where he would explain all the great things he did to the kernel to optimize his box. If you happen to be a geek yourself, this is a great question to put forward to Newbies. They’ll never trouble you with stories of their nephew or kid sister after this

A custom kernel boots up the system faster, it takes up lesser memory space and one can install drivers for special hardware not supported by a default kernel.

Before we get down to compiling our own kernel, it is a wonderful idea to backup the present kernel.

# cd /boot
# cp -pvr kernel kernel.orig

The original generic kernel is now stored as kernel.orig. In case the kernel does not boot (which has happened with me many times) boot up with the generic kernel and try again. Booting any other kernel is simple. At the boot time goto to the boot prompt and simple say "boot kernel.orig" and the default kernel would boot up.

The kernel sources are located in the /usr/src/sys directory. If not installed, the kernel sources can be installed with the following commands. First insert the FreeBSD install CD in your CD drive.

# mount /cdrom

# mkdir -p /usr/src/sys

# ln -s /usr/src/sys /sys

# cat /cdrom/src/ssys.[a-d]* | tar -xzvf -

Then go to the director where the configuration files are located.

#cd /sys/i386/conf

In this directory the GENERIC kernel configuration file is located. Copy this file and it as your custom name.

#cp -pvr GENERIC BABYBSD

# vi BABYBSD

First change the ident value from GENERIC to BABYBSD (or whatever name you prefer). I have given my sample configuration file at the end of this article. The options are quite easy to understand and a good starting point would be the FreeBSD Handbook which has documented most of the kernel options.
You can also go to a shell and run the command #make LINT in this directory which would create a file called LINT which has all the options supported by the kernel listed.

After this stage just run the following commands

#/usr/sbin/config BABYBSD

#cd ../compile/BABYBSD

#make depend

#make

#make install

Please note that you must be root to run the make install. Reboot and the kernel should boot with your shining new kernel.

Starting on an online sales business, you will need to ensure certain prerequisites before operations begin and continue in a similar fashion. Although the many interesting areas of sales development could be turning your attention from the basics, you will need to be extra careful about developing and designing online hosting techniques that feed the treasury. One of the ways you can do that is by selling web hosting. For the right sales techniques for web hosting, you might require a little guidance, which will be easy to implement once you take yourself through the under given advices.

Hosting an online business can mean drawing money from other online businesses, which could be termed as affiliates or online tenants. It works on the same concept as would any property rental, but with different parameters that need your attention. If you are interested in making good money online, you will need to ensure that your affiliates are successful. If you are hosting a sales business, it is important to invest in a favorable marketing package to begin with. No matter how dull the items sold by your affiliates, you will need to invest in techniques that draw the attention of potential buyers. Without that, you may not be able to judge if customers will get to know about the products at all.

For mastering suitable hosting techniques, you may need to understand how different kinds of affiliations work. Depending on your niche, a selection of 2-3 unique hosting techniques can usually help. However, it is important to maintain prescribed levels of stringency when it comes to providing cloud tenants permission to sale certain items.

For realizing the potential of such powers as a web host, you will need to keep your endorsement plans on the roll. While your customers may choose to do so through celebrities, local role models and attractive customers, you can choose to offer them your production team if it turns out to be cost effective. For hiring such teams at affordable rates, it would be advisable to look for moderately experienced freelancers who can market products well on online videos and widgets.

In order to make your website more visible and the products more familiar to the online buyers, you may consider using blogs, and other sources of written content, so that search engines can locate your pages more easily than you may have anticipated.

For hosting sales businesses it can be wise to use attraction-marketing techniques. Depending on your niche again, you can choose to use steamy pictures, messages, favorite tunes, poster art as well as articles filled with generous use of keywords that people in your niche express interest in.

If you are interested in a large number of openings in such directions, you might need a little more than imagination. Hiring art creationists and article writers is easy with freelancers on the internet. As a result, implementing hosting techniques and selling web-hosting cloud spaces can work well for all involved in using your online resources. It could also be important to maintain standard rates with short-term surprises to retain your customers who are selling well and attracting traffic.

The tech world is abuzz with mentions of cloud computing. It is being hailed as the harbinger of seamless communications and business. This article introduces the reader to the idea of cloud computing and the promise that it holds for businesses.

What is Cloud Computing?
Imagine an electricity grid. It works by supplying electricity to houses whenever they demand it. House owners don’t have to worry about the technical aspects of demand and supply. Similarly, cloud computing is a new approach to computing in which the end-user demands information and receives it without working out the network and infrastructure details.

How does cloud computing work?
The data generated by the end-user is stored on a server instead of on a local computer. Hence, the end-user can access the data anywhere on the earth by requesting it from the server on which it was stored. The requested data is then delivered via the cloud and can be accessed by the end-user through web-based applications.

Why Cloud Computing?
This approach to computing weeds out the dependency on localized machines. In a way, it is like dissolving all system-imposed boundaries so that data can flow freely. With it, data can be shared seamlessly with a large number of people belonging to a particular organization. For example, Gmail, which supports cloud computing allows the user to access mails from any device. However, software like MS Outlook, which don’t support this approach to computing restrict their usability as a subject to a single machine. This means that wherever you go and whatever computing device you use (mobile, laptop, workstation, and internet tablet) your office suite is just a click away. Making integrated information available to the members of an organization, through a cloud, can help facilitate IT services and even day-to-day functioning of offices.
Cloud computing is regarded by many as an improved version of grid computing. In the latter, computers are connected to a grid and information exchange takes place through demands and supply between the end-user and the server. If a node located on the grid fails, all nodes after that will fail too. Pretty much like bulbs connected in a series connection. On the contrast, in cloud computing, failure of one node doesn’t hamper the connection to the other nodes, just like a number of bulbs connected in a parallel connection.

Challenges faced by Cloud Computing
One thing that can be said about Cloud computing with near certainty is that it holds considerable promise for businesses. However, its value can be compromised by the fact that the end-user’s information is relayed to a third-party, who may compromise it to outsiders. Private clouds, which are smaller and allow greater levels of security, are the answer to this concern. Clouds of smaller organizations are less prone to outside attacks. However, organizations with larger clouds must take extra measures to stay safe.

This approach to computing, though popular, is still in its elemental stages. APIs are gaining ground for running applications in multitasking clouds. At present, Apple MobileMe, Google Apps. and Gmail are the most popular mainstream applications of cloud computing.

The top level domains (or tld) has become a important facet of life on internet. The extensions of top level domains such as .com, .org, .net have become one of the defining points of the internet and website addresses and creating a new website or internet businesses. With .com being the gold standard and other tld’s created by ICANN the international organization that handles web address being of lesser importance.ICANN has recently this month opened up the possibility of creating custom TLD for organizations, groups or companies. So instead of having a site like Facebook.com you would have “Mysite”.Facebook. Under their custom top level domain you could have several individuals or groups signing up with the host company for their own custom .facebook web address.

The reason behind this is for companies to keep control over their brands. By approving companies that meet their guidelines by giving them the .(company TLD) extension the parent company can allow the companies they want and meet their standards. Also companies can charge for use of their custom TLD’s and thus gain additional revenue by renting out web addresses under their own domain.

Note that the approval process for companies will take from half a year to a year and a half. And the projected cost to register a custom TLD per company is at least $100,000. So you more than likely will not see these new extensions until the start of 2012. With increased growth at the end of 2012 and onward. What does this mean in regards to hosting and TLD? The exact requirements are uncertain because while the option is open no company has yet went through the process. And there are still questions on who will manage the custom domains (will it be ICANN, the Businesses,or 3rd party contractors). But some general steps can be taken to get ready.

If you are planning to register your own custom domain it would be best to look at a hosting company that could handle hundreds of
sites. You would look for business class hosting with their own programming staff (to make changes as needed for your custom LD). And you would want a company which has direct control of their own sections such as Domain Name Services (DNS). That way they could quickly change settings as needed. For those who are looking to get a site that would be listed on one of these new custom domains they should be looking at some aspects of their hosting account to increase their chances. First look at a business level account for appearance sake and features that a personal account would not have. Second make sure your site it set up to be immaculate, from layout to graphics to style. Having a hosting service that has professional templates, graphics and if need be support to help you with this is needed.

If you have a site that sells products it should have a professional shopping cart and a ssl certificate to show it is secure for e–commerice. It should have at minimum for a business/nonprofit an email system for contact. And supporting sites like a well maintained blog would add to your professionalism.

The new world of custom Top Level Domains is now here. By the end of the year you should start noticing .Facebook along with .com.There are steps you can take with hosting and your site that will allow you to take advantage of this new aspect of the internet. Get ready for the future and the opportunities this could open up for you.

Contrary to what it feels like, the world of computers has not been around for that long, even less than forty years. As such, computer engineers are looking for more and more ways to give users who want it control over what happens in their computer to the greatest extent possible all while making the usage of these devices less complicated for casual users. During the past couple of years there has been this buzz around the world of computers in regards to some type of program which allows you to control what happens in your computer in terms of hardware and resource allocation in your system. This buzz is referred to as cloud hosting and it offers to those who wish it a perfectly cost-effective and scalable solution, without any downtime.

In short, if you are wondering what is cloud hosting then you could think of it as a visualization of your hardware. What could hosting does is through a program, such as Xen for example, it gives you an interface which connects you to the hardware inside your computer case. What it allows you to do is configure how much resources you want your computer to use and on what. As such you can use this great little piece of technology to partition the physical resources of a server in order to make multiple virtual servers on only one physical. Gone are now the old days when one server would equal to precisely one physical server. These days, one physical server can serve as the host to many more, all running on their separate operating systems.

If this all sounds very complex and confusing to you, even if you are knowledgeable in the world of computers, it is because it is indeed complex and confusing. And it starts to get even more complicated when you have to configure the different options of various servers and set up various firewalls. What cloud hosting does is it gives the administrator much more flexibility than in the past, not to mention the various delivery networks and hosting industries which have a very high resource demand.

If you are still wondering why exactly cloud hosting is what many have been looking for over the years, especially network managers, then you should know that various studies have shown that cloud hosting is indeed much less expensive per unit, is extremely reliable and scalable. The networks which are managed under cloud hosting are touted as being self-healing with a built-in fail-safe system. As you can imagine, for a network on which many computers depend it is of utmost importance that it be perfectly reliable and have a fail-over system built into it in case something should go horribly wrong. As for scalability, well let`s just say that with the situation as it currently is, it really is the most effective method for scaling and providing new equipment at the best possible cost. With cloud hosting you no longer need to buy various pieces of specific hardware in order to set up a database server, a web server and firewalls alike.

Everywhere you look today, you see ads for companies reading “see our website for more information”. In the beginning, smaller businesses were unable to make use of such marketing plans, however, with the ever-increasing upswing in eCommerce and increasing demand, more and more affordable web hosting options have come into place, sites such as godaddy.com, webs.com, iPage.com and even vistaprint.com now offer cheap web hosting solutions.

Depending on the hosting service you decide to use, you are offered service packages that range in cost from free, pay-per-click, and even hundreds of dollars billed either monthly, weekly, or annually. Each package offering a variety of options including site based email, traffic monitoring, technical support, and other similar features. Some web hosting services offer to register your unique domain name, design your site from a selection of pre-designed templates or to your individual requirements and specifications.

The key, of course, to selecting the best web hosting company to fit your needs is always cost. Naturally, you have to ask yourself “What size customer base am I trying to reach?” and “What type of website will best fit my company’s needs?”. With almost all web hosting services, as mentioned before, clients are offered a variety of service packages tailored to meet multiple levels of marketing and service needs. Some can be designed where a user is able to establish a unique user ID and profile, allowing them to be redirected to specific products, services or information. Other sites may be designed to collect information for employment applications or other human resources functions.

One major factor to consider, especially with cheap web hosting, is you will only get what you pay for and while there are fledgling hosting services cropping up every day, you should still consider more than one option before taking the first package you see. Ask how long they’ve been in business, ask if they can offer you a list of active sites they maintain or a list of companies or individuals they have worked with. In today’s market, a poorly designed or maintained website can hurt your professional reputation almost a badly as a dissatisfied customer.

iPage.com currently offers web hosting for a little as $4.25 USD a month that includes unlimited disk space, bandwidth and email hosting, along with free domain registration, advertising credits, and eCommerce options (web store).

GoDaddy.com offers packages ranging from $4.99 USD to $14.99 USD monthly with various features included with each package, and discounted rates for extended service agreements.

Webs.com offers web hosting service ranging from free (ad-supported) to $249.95 annually, again with a multitude of features sure to fit any professional or personal need.

Vistaprint.com currently offers packages ranging in price from $4.99 USD to $19.97 USD per month, along with a 30 day free trial for new customers.

All of these affordable web hosting service offer pre-designed templates and extremely user-friendly editing tools to facilitate simple, accurate site moderation and user interaction. While only a few cheap web hosting services were discussed here, a quick search of the internet will provide you with a virtual plethora of other affordable web hosting services.

Determining exact storage needs is a challenge for businesses of all sizes and types. Even though the cost of storage devices has dramatically dropped in recent years, itstill makes a significant impact on the overall IT expenses of companies, particularly for small businesses. In this article we will discuss some storage solutions that small businesses may utilize, as well as some of the challenges to watch out for.

Type of Data
The first step to take in determining the amount and type of storage that will be needed is to figure out exactly what kind of data will be stored and how frequently. Even more important is the fact that different departments or functions have varied storage requirements. Described below are some of the different types of storage that you may wish to consider while analyzing the needs and requirements for storage systems.

Documents Storage – For most businesses, document storage is perhaps the most common type of storage requirement. This type of storage includes text documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and similar types of files. These document file types are usually smaller in size and infrequently accessed for viewing and editing purposes, so may not have specific hardware requirements.

Database Storage – Database storage is another important requirement for any small business. This type of storage would includes data for; financial systems, customer relationship management, email and similar applications. The important characteristic of this type of data storage is the level of frequency at which it is accessed and manipulated. There are a lot of software solutions which use ‘out of box’ database software like MS SQL, MySQL and Oracle which are optimized for maintaining large databases and support a variety of hardware systems. However, there is some software which use proprietary database engines and may have specific hardware requirements.

Media Storage – Media storage includes audio visual data such as video files, music files, and photographs. This type of storage may constitute only a very small percentage of the data storage for most businesses. However, for some specialized businesses, such as media production companies, this type of storage may be the most critical type of data storage requirement. Due to the nature of this data, each file can command comparatively larger chunks of storage space than other data types

Data Access
It is typical that most companies have a need for all of the above types of storage in varying degrees. However, it is important to identify the balance between the storage requirement and the type of data being stored. Other factors which need to be identified can include how frequently the data will be accessed or modified and the method of access.
Frequency of Access: Frequency of access addresses how often the stored files will be accessed for modification and manipulation. If the stored media is accessed frequently, it will need to be stored on high speed storage drives, which are usually more expensive. However, if not accessed frequently, then one may get away with storing it on less expensive varieties of media storage.

Method of Access: Another factor which needs to be identified while analyzing the need for small business storage is how the data stored will be accessed. Data will typically be accessed over a local area network or the Internet or on a single storage drive. Therefore, depending on the access method, different types of storage media will be preferred. Once the usage pattern for storage has been identified, there should be a good understanding of storage requirements for the business, as well as the amount of storage space that may be needed to store the data.

Types of Storage
After identifying the requirements of the storage, the next step is to analyze the kind of hardware that would be required for fulfilling the storage needs. Let’s look at the various categories of hardware storage solutions available.
Network Storage: Data stored on a network, be it a local network or over the Internet, is usually accessed or repurposed by multiple people. In order to deliver the stored data to multiple people, the storage device has to have high read-write speed. Without a high read-write speed, corruption of data or hardware failure may occur. Such advanced speed devices are usually on the more expensive side as they requires a more sophisticated technology to deploy. As of recently, advances in Solid State storage devices has been improving in terms of performance, while reducing the pricing for network storage.

Local Storage: If the storage is done on a local platform then there will only be a single read /write stream to the data storage device itself. This means that concurrent pressure on the read-write stream will be far less than what would occur on a network storage device. Less pressure also means that it is possible to have a lower read-write speed, which in turn makes it possible to use less expensive storage devices solutions.

Backup Storage: Backup storage is another critical segment of the storage system that is needed by any company. It is important to keep in mind that no matter what storage device is used, it is never fail proof. For this reason it is important to have storage redundancy. A critical characteristic which differentiates backup storage from active storage is that the frequency of read-write activity on the backup disks is far less than on storage devices with operating systems running on the same system. Hence it is ultimately cheaper and easier to have independent, high capacity storage devices as backup storage devices.

Redundant Array of Independent or Inexpensive Disks (RAID) storage devices are a highly reliable storage and backup solution which replicate the data across multiple disks in real time. Hardware RAID storage devices can be much more expensive than your typical network attached or single disk solutions. However, they do provide superior insurance against data loss occurrences. A common RAID alternative to consider is software RAID. Since it is beyond the scope of this article to fully discuss this method of storage, please use the following links for more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
http://www.adaptec.com/NR/rdonlyres/14B2FD84-F7A0-4AC5-A07A-214123EA3DD6/0/4423_SW_HWRAID_10.pdf
External/Removable Storage: Removable storage devices can be connected to, and moved among various systems. These devices may include external hard drives, magnetic disks, flash disks, and optical disks, among other devices. With an understanding of various types of removable storage requirements and the solutions available, the exact type of solution required can be determined after analyzinge the specific business needs.

Network Storage: Depending on the number of systems connected to the network or the storage of data on the website, the capacity of the network devices needs to be analyzed. Once this requirement is determined, the number of concurrent read-write operations that may take place needs to be considered. The more concurrent read-write connections exist, the higher the operation speed the device should be.

Storage Requirements

Local Requirements: No matter how advanced the network available to the business systems is, every network has a requirement for local storage, which includes the operating system, the software running on the local machine, and the network software. Since a large number of people are not expected to have concurrent read-write operations on the systems, it is possible to use have a lower speed device for this purpose. However, the local device should still have enough capacity to run the operating system and store the required data locally.

Backup Requirements: The storage capacity of the backup devices needs to be analyzed in connection with company IT policies concerning how often and how much data backup is regularly required. Since the backup devices are not required to be under the constant stress of a read-write stream, it is possible to utilize a device with high capacity and lower operation speed.

External/Removable Requirements: Depending on the need for data mobility, regardless of the network, the space needed to store the files may be analyzed and external storage devices can be made available to key personnel who may need the data at any given time. These devices may include optical drives like DVDs and CDs, or external hard disks with high storage capacity.

How to Avoid Common Storage Pitfalls
Perform Regular Backups: No matter what storage device is used, there is always a possibility of storage device failure. Storage devices can suffer physical damage or may be impacted by electro magnetic fields, as well as other situations which may result in data loss. Because of this it is imperative to ensure that regular backups of all company data is routinely performed.

De-Fragment Regularly: If the device can be defragmented, such as a hard disk or a flash device, then regular defragmentation of the storage device can help with better conservation of the space, increasing the operation efficiency, and reducing overall wear & tear of the storage device. Defragmentation of the storage devices can consume a great deal of time if it is not done regularly. The overall increase in the efficiency of the device and potential for more usable drive space makes this time well spent.

Enforce Redundancy: With the prices of storage hardware lower than they’ve ever been, it is relatively easy to have a data redundancy (backup) system in place. There can be backup on a local level or it may be an option to have it located offsite. Many companies with a requirement for high data security choose to have offsite backup located in multiple locations.

Formal Data Policies: All companies should have formal data policies which define what roles and permissions each level of personnel may have with regards to data access. It is also important to include within the policies how the data should be accessed, manipulated or transported.

Data Security: Data security is an extremely important consideration – not only with regard to physical security, but also security from hackers, espionage and accidental losses. As part of a good security system, all sensitive data that could damage or be used against the company should be encrypted and access to it strictly controlled. Audits of security procedures by accredited third parties is highly recommended for situations where the data security is highly critical; such as product formulas, proprietary processes, R & D results, etc.

In today’s world of networking, Internet based computing and telecommuting, the preservation and security of data is key to the prosperity and survival of a company. The risk of of losing that data, or losing control of it, could very well cripple an organization. Therefore taking proper steps to preserve and secure it are crucial for the maintainance, growth, and success of any type of business regardless of size.

Businesses are continually searching for new methods that will serve them well in growing their company. As the Internet blogosphere continues to evolve, literally exploding over the last few years, blogging has become a very popular way for companies to leverage more exposure that can lead to more overall business.

Blog search engine Technorati’s ”State of the Blogosphere 2008” report indicates that more than 1.2 million bloggers have registered with the Technorati website alone. At present there are an estimated 39 million plus blogs in existence, with approximately 75,000 new blogs created daily.

Blog postings generally consist of fairly short essays that include links to relevant information, often with the ability for readers to participate in the comments section. Additional readers can add to existing comments, creating opportunity for a business to interact directly with their end users. This open and personalized dialogue style can create positive visibility and brand presence for any company. Below are just some of the ways in which blogs are being used to augment a business marketing strategy.

Building Online Visibility
It is fairly well understood that ”content is king” on the Internet. It is great content and information which generates the interest of consumers.Blogs that actively work on postive feedback, generate the higher interest among consumers and can typically expect more customer sales. With the ever-increasing proliferation of Internet access and competition websites, a strong online presence fortified by a committed core of followers can give a business the edge needed to prosper.

As observed in Technorati’s ”State of the Blogosphere 2008” study, “In many ways the proliferation of blogging has transformed the venture business — entrepreneurs expect a level of transparency that simply didn’t exist before venture investors started blogging. I can not imagine staying current in this fast moving, high tech world without using blogs and bloggers as a powerful filter of the overwhelming torrent of information we all face.” (David Hornik, August Capital, www.ventureblog.com).

Social Networking and Relationships
Long before the Internet exploded as a mainstay of business marketing, savvy professionals had learned the importance of building satisfied customer relationships. The power of a satisfied customer who tells his story to others is still a very strong tactic for increasing visibility and sales. Likewise, an unsatisfied customer can be equally powerful in changing the perception of a potential new customer. In marketing, this is known as “value attribution” and it has power to influence the reputation of a company or brand.

A blog is an excellent tactic to manage and control the information that is disseminated about a company’s products and services. In addition, blogging can also be an effective tool to use in balancing much of the information that is available about any given company. As an example, specific customer concerns that may have been expressed in an informal blog forum may then be acted upon in a variety of ways by the company. New customer service methods can be devised, products and services may be adjusted, and then those actions can be advertised and promoted for the benefit of the company. This will also serve to provide even greater visibility to attract new customers for the company.

Depending on how popular a product or service is, there may be many people who are already very familiar with that product or service. A blog that discusses popular products and services can be very effective in diverting the attention of potential customers toward your web site as a place to comparison shop or even purchase products and services.

Blogs can also be used to find the kinds of readers who may be more likely to become your customers, by reaching specific demographics. Existing customers could also be encouraged to remain some of your best customers, after you have taken the time to get to know them and have helped resolve an issue or provided useful information to them.

For example, by engaging readers with a comment or feedback form, you can glean what may be more important to people and make an effort to provide it to them. The company blog can also offer many opportunities in which to dialogue with customers and ensure a higher satisfaction rate. This method keeps the lines of communication open both ways, as opposed to marketing techniques that generally only send one-way messages.

Getting to know your existing customers and nurturing the relationship with the best information that you can provide, could also help you to find more potential consumers with very similar needs along the way. Using these methods could potentially create virtually limitless growth opportunities for your business.

Creating and Managing a Business Reputation
Generally, consumers like to do business with people and companies that they have developed a comfort level with. As a business, it is important that the concepts that define your company are being imparted to your market. One great way to strengthen all customer relationships is to let people know what your company stands for and what it is that you are trying to accomplish. This tactic, rather than just focusing on sales, can really serve to set your business apart from others offering similar products and services. By letting people know what’s important to your company, you can often be speaking to their needs, as well.

For example, if you are involved in a charity, you could indicate this and discuss it in a blog. In this way, you are informing people about the humanitarian culture of your company, without making a lot of fuss and fanfare that could obviously be looked upon as nothing more than a photo op aimed at cheap publicity. Instead, the charitable activity could produce a frame of reference that a others may strongly identify with, thus creating a potential for brand loyalty.

Sharing customer success stories, demonstrating solutions that your company offers, and discussing problems that have been solved, can serve very well in building a business reputation while further enhancing a brand image.

Establishing Customer Loyalty
By far, customer loyalty is one of the most important aspects in creating, building, and growing any business. Repeat business sustains companies at all levels, especially during economic downturns. The larger the loyal customer base, the less likely it is that a business will struggle to survive.

A blog’s showcase of many different solutions can ultimately encourage customers to do more business with your company. By detailing helpful and useful information, your credibility as a product or service provider can increase. This can help to establish you as an influencer of opinion down the road. Featuring some of your customers can enhance your business relationship with them and may increase their level of loyalty overall. By instituting a subscription option through RSS and email of your blog, you also have opportunities to interact with subscribers each time a piece is published.

By engaging new and existing customers through a blog and interacting with them, you will be in the best position possible to provide what it is that they need. This creates a win-win for you and your customers, and that will attract even more.

Traffic Building Techniques
Because of the keyword and informational nature of blogs, they are one of the perfect forums that adapt very well to search engine optimization. Search engine spiders live and thrive on fresh content. While a company website might be rather static with little need for content changes, a regularly updated blog provides the freshest, keyword-rich content for search engines. This can cause a web site to rank higher when potential customers search for the products and services that your company provides – which ultimately can drives more traffic to the web site.

Starting a Blog
The first thing to do when deciding to start a blog is to define the purpose of the blog. It is also a good idea to map out a simple plan of topics relating to the issues surrounding your business that are worth discussing. For example, in a fast-paced technology business, a blog could follow current trends to inform clients and attract new ones, as it continually details fresh and innovative ideas.

Blogging Tools
There are plenty of free and low-cost blogging tools available, and publishing is generally very simple. In determining which ones to use, you must decide whether you want to host the blog yourself, or use a free hosted blogging service.

Keep in mind that free blogging services, just like anything else, are not really free. For example, a free blogging service does not provide your own domain. Remember that if you use a free service, you may have no control over the website, and therefore, no way to manage your readership. There may also be some restrictions as to the kind of content that may be published on the blog.

If you are serious about using a blog to enhance your business, it is best to start with registering your own domain name. That way, you don’t have to be concerned about losing a readership if the blog grows and you need to move it elsewhere, or about the blogging service going out of business. Plus this gives you a more credibility as a source.

One of the best and more affordable ways to create a blog is to get a reasonably priced hosting service and use the blog software that is provided by the hosting company, or use WordPress free blog software.

A great place to find out more about blogging is at Webhostingtalk.com. It is the largest online forum community that specializes in discourse concerning the hosting industry. The forum contains some very useful information about its users’ experiences with blogging. You can also join the forum and post an inquiry to receive feedback from some of the more experienced hosting industry professionals.

Regular blogging not only keeps fresh information about your products and services front and center for the online consumer, but it also can serve to lessen the visibility of competitors who are as savvy. The more useful and valuable information that you can provide to existing and potential consumers, the more visible your company will be. Higher visibility makes it possible for more potential customers to find their way to your website and become consumers of your products and services.

As Michael Arrington, Founder of the popular webzine TechCrunch said, ”Whatever happens next with blogging, it’s here to stay. And I can’t wait to see what comes next.” (http://technorati.com/blogging/state-of-the-blogosphere).

A really great blog can keep your company in the forefront so that those who have done business with you in the past keep coming back to your website for more information. Once your website is established as a resource for information about certain products and services, consumers will be more likely to think of your company first when they are ready to make a purchase. That fact alone makes blogging and social networking well worth the time invested.

Whenever you have a technical question that needs answering, you want that answer as fast as possible, right? In the instantaneous world of the Internet, patience has become a rare commodity, and the time you spend unable to send or receive email or waiting for your website to come back online can mean lost revenue. If you want to get a timely response from your support technician, there are things you can do as a customer to speed up the process:

Define the problem as accurately as possible
The more detail you can provide, the more quickly the technician can identify the source of the problem and correct it. Try to determine the following information if possible:

What were you doing when the error occurred?

What program were you operating that produced the error? Note the version of the program and the operating system that you are running on your computer.

If there is a specific error message, what does it say? Be prepared to give this information to the technician by phone, email or fax.

What are the steps you take to reproduce the error?

What time did you first notice the error?

Did the error occur only once, consistently over a period of time, or only when you do a certain thing?

Can you reproduce the error on a separate computer?

Know the priority status of your request
Support technicians get many requests during the course of the day, often at the same time, with varying levels of urgency, and these requests take time to resolve. If a request cannot be resolved immediately, then it will be assigned an appropriate priority level based on the type of problem to be resolved as soon as possible.

Outages – Always top priority. If your website or email is down, any good technician should drop all other projects until this is resolved.

Breakages – If a critical part of your website becomes inoperable due to a server error, such as a database for a shopping cart, this should always be addressed with high priority.

Time Sensitive Operations – If you need something to be done within a certain time frame, such as enabling or disabling a feature of your account, then you should make this clear to the technician. The operation should be performed within the prescribed time frame as long as a higher priority issue does not arise.

Ongoing Problems – If a particular problem continues to occur for an extended period of time, its priority should be raised as necessary the longer the problem goes on.

Non-Critical Operations – If your request does not adversely affect the function of your services or contain a time-sensitive element, it will receive the lowest priority, but it still should be handled as soon as reasonably possible.

Allow an appropriate response time
As stated previously, most technicians have more than one problem to handle at once, so once you have an idea of the priority level of your request, allow a reasonable amount of time for it to be resolved. Server errors should be resolved within hours to same day, depending on the circumstances. Lower priority items which can be quickly resolved should usually be handled by the next day. If a request will require several hours of work to resolve, expect it to take longer. A technician’s job is to be constantly interrupted all day, so such requests will usually be saved until time permits or passed off to another available person to be completed. Understand that any completion time estimate given to you is assuming the absence of any higher priority requests intervening in the process.

Most types of technical support requests should be answered with an acknowledgement of completion. If you do not receive one or are unable to determine on your own that your issue has been resolved within a reasonable amount of time, then you should contact the technician again to inquire about the status of your request.

Be a pest if you have to, but be courteous
If your request is taking an unreasonable amount of time to be resolved, then there is some truth to the old adage that “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” If the technician can give you a reasonable explanation for the extended time frame, such as resolving a higher priority issue, then try to give them an appropriate extension to resolve your request. If the explanation for the delay is unsatisfactory and the problem continues to go unresolved, you may need to ask for the assistance of another technician. You should be assertive because your are paying for your services, but do not be abusive. Technicians are human beings too, and not all of them are going to respond well to your unpleasant remarks. If the situation becomes bad enough that you truly believe your anger is warranted, ask to speak with somebody else, describe the unsatisfactory response you received, and request that your issue be handled with the highest priority possible. If this doesn’t work, then it’s time to consider switching service providers.

Know the technician’s responsibilities
A support technician at a hosting company is not necessarily responsible for every possible problem you can have on the internet. He is only responsible for resolving problems with the services that his company provides to you. If the company only provides web hosting and domain registration services, then they cannot be held responsible for problems caused by website design flaws, internet connection service outages, email addresses obtained through other providers, or office network problems. Most good technicians are willing to give you a limited amount of assistance with these types of problems anyway, but it should not be expected of them and you should know who else to call if the technician determines that the problem is not within his realm of control.

Don’t be a hypochondriac
You should learn to help yourself whenever possible, because it’s almost always faster than asking somebody else for help. If you are constantly asking for the same password or asking the technician to perform the same task over and over again when you can learn to do it yourself, you are wasting the technician’s time and preventing other people from being helped quickly and efficiently. Learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them. If you are always making the same mistakes and asking somebody else to fix them, you will quickly find yourself at the bottom of anybody’s priority list. If the technician explains to you how to do something, make sure that the procedure is recorded and stored where you can find it again. It’s worth your extra time and his to do this if it saves you both time later on a repetitive task.

Although every case is unique, we believe that by following these guidelines you will consistently receive faster and friendlier assistance on most of your technical support requests.
