Domainhijacking is the practice of stealing an organization or individualwebsite name. The hijacker could send the current owner a phony ormisleading registration transfer approval form or submit a fraudulenttransfer authorization to the current website host. Several conferencesessions will feature experts from both the legal and operations sidesof the internet industry, including Richard Lau of Domain Manager;patent attorney John Berryhill PHD,; Ari Goldberger of ESQwire; ScottDonahey of Tomlinson Zisko; Bob Cumbow of Graham & Dunn PC; DerekNewman of Newman & Newman and Devon Ryning of Miller-Nash LLP.
In Cyber Squatting, a person may register well-known names or words,or common typographical errors of popular names as websites. Theregistrant then offers to sell the website, often for a considerableprice, or diverts the web traffic to a website where they make moneyfrom advertising or product sales.
In 1999 the Congress passed the Anti Cyber Squatting ConsumerProtection Act, which extended the rights of trademark ownership toinclude websites. More recently, Internet regulatory organization ICANNcreated the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, known asUDRP to address this issue.
