Google Launches Book Search Beta Test
Mountain View, California, December 18, 2003 — Google.com, the Internet search behemoth, has announced the launch of a new search service aimed at organizing the world’s printed materials.
According to the Google.com web site: "Google’s mission is to provide access to all the world’s information and make it universally useful and accessible. It turns out that not all the world’s information is already on the Internet, so Google has been experimenting with a number of publishers to test their content online. During this trial, publishers’ content is hosted by Google and is ranked in our search results according to the same technology we use to evaluate websites."
The service is being labeled as ‘Google Print (BETA)’ on the Google site.
According to Google there will be links to certain ‘popular’ booksellers - to offer searchers the opportunity to buy the books that are in the search results. While the search results are not paid at present, Google has stated that their popular AdWords ads will be served in the Google Print BETA search results.
Pages that are part of the Google Print program will be identified with print.google.com/print at the beginning of their URLs and have an "About Google Print" link at the bottom of each page. The pages will also be clearly marked in Google’s search results with a [BOOK - BETA] tag.
