I differ on the data backup point. Our property should be primarily our own concern, we must ensure regular backup instead of depending on hosting providers. I agree, Goaddy and Hostgator is preferred by many webmasters, but there are many other good hosting merchants too.

It is always better to go with cheap web host than free one. If it’s just a hobby site which isn’t generating any revenue, paid host should be option to consider. It is possible to get good hosting service for less than $5 monthly, so why risk and choose free web host?
