DomainMart, a provider of domain-name secondary-market services, today issued a warning to participants in affiliate programs of the potential of brand name dilution and traffic hijacking. The warning also outlines counter measures to monitor and protect third-level domain names.

DomainMart points out that in such situations, there are two levels of initiatives that you can take to protect your brand name. First find out whether such an infringement is underway and the second is a proactive measure to monitor and limit damages from such violations. As for the second level of proactive protection, DomainMart has developed a service to monitor and notify when infringements take place.

“Such domain name hijackings go un-noticed, because the affiliates assume that reputable sponsors would not engage in such activity,” notes Alex Tajirian, President & CEO of DomainMart. “Although there is no evidence that the major affiliate program sponsors are knowingly participating in the illegal scheme, it is the responsibility of the affiliates to protect their brand names and Website traffic,” adds Tajirian.
