Google announced late last week that it has launched a new service referred to as ‘personalized webpage’. The service is similar to those already existing at competing search portals. The core of the service is an easy-to-use interface permitting various Google components and third party information to be mixed and matched to suit the needs of the user. The modules that are currently available for use are: Gmail, Google News, Stock Market, New York Times, BBC News, Weather, Wired News, Slashdot, Movies, Driving Directions, Quote of the Day, and Word of the Day. An example of a ‘personalized webpage’ created by Google for demonstration purposes can be seen here: http://www.google.com/ig.
According to Marissa Mayer, Director of Consumer Web Products for Google, and Jessica Ewing, Product Manager for Google via the Google Blog the personalized webpage project is part of a strategic initiative that Google refers to as ‘fusion’. It’s purpose is to bringtogether Google functionality, and content from across the web, inuseful ways. It is anticipated that the personalized webpage will support and accept any standardized feed in the near future. Google points out that the new service will not replace the current Google home page - it is designed to be a complement to it.
