The Lycos 50(TM) Top 10 Search Terms for the Week Ending
December 20,
2003:
1) Paris Hilton
2) Christmas
3) KaZaA
4) Britney Spears
5) Saddam Hussein
6) Lord of the Rings
7) NFL
8) Christmas Cards
9) Brooke Burke
10) Christmas Carols
Notes of Interest
The capture of Saddam Hussein garnered a great deal of search
activity
from Web users, but still not enough to topple Paris Hilton
from the number
one spot on this week's list. Saddam searches stayed high
all week, with
online interest ranging from "how did we capture him"
to "what are we going to
do with him now?" There were also a significant number
of searches for Saddam
jokes.
Normally, this time of year would bring Christmas (#2) as
the number one
search term. But even all the combined searches for trees,
cards, carols,
ornaments, recipes, gifts, poems, prayers, and everything
else associated with
Christmas cannot conquer the Paris Hilton sex tape, which
continues at number
one for the sixth straight week. Meanwhile, from the world
of movies, Spider-
Man 2 arrived this week at number 32 on The Lycos 50 partly
because the first
trailer was released on the Web last week. Spider-Man 2
comes out next May
and features all the folks from the first film as well as
Alfred Molina as
classic Spidey foe Dr. Octopus.
Other Notes of Interest
Survivor (#14) is super hot this week, not only because
of searches for
the recently completed Survivor 7: Pearl Islands, but also
in anticipation of
February's Survivor 8: Survivor All-Star, where top winners
from Survivor's
past return to take each other on for even more money.
Short Subjects
Searches for college football (#50) continue to go up and
down, in the
past four weeks going from number 23 to number 43, back
up to number 14, and
then way down to number 50. Lord of the Rings (#6) is hot
in theatres and
brings top actor Orlando Bloom (#37) back onto The Lycos
50. Food search
queries for Omaha Steaks and honey-baked hams have both
doubled, although not
popular enough to make The Lycos 50.
