Online Storage Providers Reviewed

Box.net

Perhaps the most recent online file storage service,  box.net offers a simple and elegant AJAX based interface  for file uploads, downloads and manipulation. It currently  offers 1GB of space for free, or 5GB for $4.99 with 20GB  monthly bandwidth transfer. Some of its features include  multi-user access, automatic thumbnailing of image files  and public/private file sharing.

Streamload

Provides a personal, secure digital library of all your MP3s,  videos, digital photos and work related documents. While  the other services reviewed have a limitation on the  storage quota, Streamload provides unlimited storage  space, but however restricts the download limit. Its  25GB/month download plan is priced at $9.95 per month.  Streamload users can use its Windows software for easily  upload and sharing of files.

Xdrive

Xdrive comes with both a client based software and web  based interface for file upload. For $10, you can get 5GB  of secure online storage. Its Windows based application  create a virtual network drive on your ‘My Computer’  making it easier to upload files or backup complete folders  from your computer to XSrive. A "Share" option allows you  to allows you to “Send a File,” “Link a Folder,” and “Share  a Folder” – giving you almost the exact same  customability and options as any portable hard drive  would.

IBackup

IBackup provides an extensive feature-set for secure  online storage including Network Drive, Sharing,  Collaboration, Sub-Accounts, WebFolders and Mobile  Access. IBackup does have a couple of more interesting  features, including a Snapshot feature which allows you  to retrieve files up to ten-days old, even if you’ve deleted  them from your hard drive or revised them. You can  schedule incremental, differential or full backups, and data  is encrypted for security. IBackup’s basic plan (*est. $15  for 4GB) includes file sharing, but doesn’t have the  Snapshots feature. Since IBackup works with both  Windows and Mac computers, it’s a good alternative to  Xdrive for Apple users.

GoDaddy Online File Folder

GoDaddy recently introduced their file hosting service.  Starting at $9.99 per year for 1GB of disk space, it is the  ideal solution for SMB. It provides an online interface for  manipulation of files and also offers a WebDAV support to  manage files and folders as easily as if they were located  on a local network drive on Windows. Other features  includes file compression and encryption.
