Under terms of the agreement, Internap FCP 5000 devices have been installed at Rackspace’s network facilities in Texas and Virginia, helping Rackspace boost its network performance by as much as 20 to 40 percent, while also giving them more control over their bandwidth costs.

According to Internap, The Internap FCP solution intelligently routes traffic across multiple private or public IP networks, offering unprecedented continuity of operations, improved network performance and cost savings as well as route control capability that extends down to the application and/or user level. Utilizing real-time observation of traffic flows, the FCP solution leverages patent-pending monitoring and management technologies to measure actual traffic performance to network destinations, as well as performance of alternate IP network paths, re-routing traffic as the best performing path changes.

“Implementing Internap’s FCP allowed us to control our costs, while dramatically improving network performance for our customers,” said Paul Froutan, vice president of engineering for Rackspace. “After evaluating multiple solutions from a variety of vendors, we determined that the Internap solution had the features that best suited our needs of increasing reliability and performance, while reducing cost.”

Froutan noted that the traditional Internet routing protocol, known as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), lacks the intelligence to determine the best routes to minimize latency and packet loss. In addition, he said there is no known method, using BGP or otherwise, to reliably set limits on how much traffic is sent through each connection. While carriers can manipulate BGP to cause traffic changes, those changes are not granular, can cause large traffic shifts during link failures, and can cause excess latency. By choosing Internap’s FCP, Rackspace was able to address all of these problems.

“The performance of the network is improved, as the FCP’s active probes determine high latency or packet loss through each link or at specific locations and automatically reroute traffic through higher performing routes,” Froutan added. “In addition, it allows our network engineers to consistently and reliably control traffic through each link, while minimizing costs and the risk of overloading any WAN link.”

“The professionals at Rackspace are recognized leaders in the hosting business and are known for their brand of customer service called Fanatical Support(TM),” noted Dave Abrahamson, vice president of sales and chief marketing officer of Internap. “That’s why we’re pleased to be associated with Rackspace and to help them deliver their superior managed hosting services with the assistance of Internap’s Flow Control Platform.”

Rackspace offers managed services for hosting platforms of all sizes and complexities. The company provides the network infrastructure, data center, hardware, operating system, bandwidth, managed security services, storage, disaster recovery and Fanatical Support(TM) to enterprises seeking an outsourced solution to run their Web applications.
