I don’t think low cost of website setup is the main reason for getting a website instead of social media profile. Social media is for conversation and communication, but website is the central of marketing hub, it is sales funnel. In other hand, a website is an unique identify for brand, a brand has full control over it while social media cannot do. That’s my opinion.

I agree that Social Networking is for Networking and you can save traffic if you host your on sites. You can save more and you can see the effect long term. Invest on the hosting.

The biggest reason that I give to my readers is simply that the costs of web hosting have diminished to the point that there is no reason not to have a website. You can get a relatively good web hosting plan for about $40/year and even if you don’t get much traffic it is not hard to recoup that amount with a well monetized web site.

Start off with a blog in your subject of expertise and see where it goes.
