VeriSign Payment Merchants Record Increased Transactions and Sales Volumes Headed Into Online Shopping Season
Merchants Utilize VeriSign Intelligence and Control(SM) Services for Commerce
Security to Prevent Fraud and Boost Consumer Trust in Online Transactions
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — VeriSign, Inc.
(Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of critical infrastructure services for
the Internet and telecommunications networks, announced today that transaction
volumes for its more than 97,000+ online retailers increased to $6.9 billion
during the third quarter of 2003. The increase is the result of more online
merchants adopting VeriSign(R) Fraud Protection Services to provide further
protection against identity, cash, and product theft in processing electronic
transactions.
VeriSign merchant customer online transaction revenues account for
30 percent of North American eCommerce, providing an extensive snapshot of
overall commercial Internet transactions. Additionally, their revenue figures
serve as a prominent industry benchmark for evaluating upcoming online
shopping trends during the holiday season.
Increased merchant transactions and sales are up across nearly every
merchant product category. Following are statistics, gathered from VeriSign’s
online payments network, that provide further insight into the increasing
rates of Internet commerce heading into the holiday season:
— From January through October 2003, overall online commercial sales
volumes through VeriSign’s payment network increased from $9.7 billion
in 2002 to $19.8 billion. Merchant sales volumes for September and
October combined, increased from $2.56 billion during 2002 to
$4.73 billion during the same two months of 2003.
— The majority of online purchases through VeriSign’s payment network
continue to be made during business hours from 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday. During 2003 more than half of all purchases were
made during this time period — reinforcing, once again, that a
majority of Internet shopping still takes place during consumers’
working hours.
— The two busiest online shopping days of the week for VeriSign merchant
customers are Monday and Friday, followed by Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. The two slowest days of the week for online purchases are
Saturday and Sunday. The single busiest week for online shopping is the
week prior to the Christmas holiday.
— December and November are the busiest two months for online shopping,
with purchases through VeriSign’s payment network totaling more than
$2.96 billion in 2002. Current patterns indicate that consumers are on
pace to spend more than double that amount through VeriSign merchants
this year.
— The slowest online shopping months continue to be June, July, and
August. However, online spending through VeriSign merchants during the
2003 timeframe increased by 87 percent, accounting for $6.3 billion
versus only $3.4 billion over the same time period in 2002.
As consumers continue to transact more online, VeriSign has experienced a
corresponding rise in the number of merchants using VeriSign Fraud Protection
Services to guard against emerging fraud schemes that can disrupt customer
trust and lead to lost or stolen revenues. Since VeriSign launched VeriSign
Fraud Protection Services in June of this year, approximately 40 percent of
new VeriSign Payment Services customers have added it to their overall payment
processing solution.
VeriSign Fraud Protection Services provide seamless integration with buyer
authentication programs, such as MasterCard(R) SecureCode(TM), enabling
VeriSign merchants to offer consumers the option to use password protected
credit cards when making purchases online. VeriSign Fraud Protection Services
customers include such well-known merchants as the Dallas Cowboys online Web
store, Loews Theatres, Reliable Communications and Robert Mondavi Winery.
Earlier this month, VeriSign also unveiled a new online trust mark that
helps merchants distinguish themselves as a legitimate online business.
Leading retailers currently displaying the VeriSign trust mark include The
Ansel Adams Gallery (http://www.AnselAdams.com), Circuit City (http://www.CircuitCity.com),
Omaha Steaks (http://www.OmahaSteaks.com), CompUSA (http://www.CompUSA.com), and Godiva
Chocolatier (http://www.Godiva.com).
