Virgin Travelstore Finds Internet Security With NaviSite EuropeLeading Travel Company Seeks Out Hosting Provider for Protection from Internet Worms

November 19th, 2003 - NaviSite Europe Limited, a subsidiary of NaviSite Inc., a managed infrastructure service provider, today announced a twelve-month contract to supply a managed Microsoft software patching service to Virgin Travelstore, part of the Virgin Travel Group headed by Sir Richard Branson. The contract is an extension to the significant hosting arrangement that Virgin Travelstore already has in place with NaviSite Europe.

Virgin Travelstore was formed in 2000 to provide travel services through both an online web site and a call centre. The web site (www.virgin.com/travelstore) contains details of over two million flights, holiday packages, hotels and car rentals at very competitive prices, as well as a search engine for customers to browse the site for the best bargains. The site is registered with ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) and has become an increasingly important part of the group’s business.

"For some time we’ve been getting increasingly concerned over the rise in internet security threats that target Microsoft systems," said Brett Warbrick, Head of E-Business at Virgin Travelstore. "The recent attacks by the Blaster worm were the last straw. With our web presence representing such a large proportion of our business we just can’t afford to take that risk!"

At its peak the Blaster worm was estimated to have infected nearly 1.5 million computers worldwide.

"The NaviSite Europe patching service gives us peace of mind," continued Warbrick. "They use sophisticated software that constantly examines the patches that Microsoft issues for its software, and then they apply the relevant ones on a weekly basis. But if Microsoft declare a particular patch to be critical, then NaviSite will apply it straightaway. Having so many systems to manage it no longer made sense to do all of the patching ourselves."

NaviSite Europe already hosts 15 Dell PowerEdgeTM servers and a secure Virtual Private Network for Virgin Travelstore. The additional patching service utilises Patchlink UpdateTM software from Patchlink Corp. to automatically schedule patch updates on a weekly basis. However, Virgin Travelstore remain in control of their systems by being able to ‘opt out’ of specific non-critical patches when they wish to.

"The take up level of our automatic patching service amongst our customers is a strong indicator of the increasing regularity of internet threats against Microsoft software," said Stephen Scott, Managing Director, NaviSite Europe. "Customers just can’t cope with the burden of constant vigilance that’s part and parcel of the internet today, whereas NaviSite Europe are set up to do just that."
