You always get what you pay for. Of course it is your responsibility to pay for what you need and can afford. I don’t think it’s wise to look for cheap hosting when building an e-commerce type of site. But comparing different providers to get the best price for your requirements is a must. But like Kristy said, choose one you can trust.

It’s difficult really – most smaller e-commerce sites are running on a relatively tight budget, and can’t afford the hundreds of pounds or dollars a month that secure, high quality managed hosting costs.

At the same time though, you don’t want the website being inaccessible because your host isn’t quite good enough, not to mention the importance of keeping data secure.

My best advice is the following:

If you want a website to sell a few products a day/week and won’t worry if it is down for 1-4 hours per month, then get a shared hosting web host, because this is the cheapest option.

If you have a website that you are receiving a ton of traffic to and you will, without a doubt, lose sales if it goes down for 1-4 hours once per month, then by all means get a Virtual Private Server or a dedicated server as they will not go down as frequently as shared servers and can handle larger traffic fluctuations.

If you are a computer coder and enjoy programming and have a website that you cannot afford to go down, then get a dedicated server where you control everything (like software and programming) yourself.

Thanks for the comments on e-commerce solutions. After having worked on dozens of different e-commerce sites I can say that in my opinion scalability and data security are the two most important items to cover. When working with credit card data and relying on a SaaS solution this has always worried me, though the requirements for doing this in-house is even more worrisome.

I think that you gave all the most important informations. As an owner of a e-commerce website I struggled a lot with my previous creation. With my experience I’ll have too second You on that server scalability and customer support. This two things are essential in e-commerce.
